The circle of life is bringing one of Broadway’s most beloved productions back to Pittsburgh!
The Lion King has been touring North America for more than 24 years and has welcomed over 28 million theatergoers, making it North America’s longest-running and most-attended Broadway tour. After more than 10,000 performances in over 90 North American cities, the spectacular production is returning to the Benedum Center.
Pittsburgh’s eagerly awaited return of The Lion King begins Wednesday, September 9, for a limited three-week engagement through Sunday, September 27, 2026.

About The Lion King
Approaching 30 landmark years on Broadway, The Lion King remains one of the most popular stage musicals of all time. Since its November 13, 1997 premiere, 30 global productions have been seen by more than 130 million people.
Produced by Disney Theatrical Group under the direction of Andrew Flatt and Anne Quart, the musical has made theatrical history with multiple productions running for more than two decades.
The production has been performed in nine languages and has played more than 100 cities in 24 countries on every continent except Antarctica. Current productions can be found on Broadway and in London, Paris, Hamburg, Madrid, Tokyo and Mexico City, along with the North American tour.
An Award-Winning Production
The Lion King won six Tony Awards® in 1998, including Best Musical, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Musical.
The production has also earned more than 70 major arts awards, including the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Musical, a Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album and Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design.
Julie Taymor, who conceived and directed the production and serves as its costume designer and mask co-designer, became the first woman to win a Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical.
The Music
The Broadway score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s beloved songs from the animated film, along with new music and additional material by Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer.
The musical brings together Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, from the Academy Award®-winning “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” to Lebo M’s powerful choral numbers.
The Creative Team
The book was adapted by Roger Allers, co-director of the animated feature, and Irene Mecchi, co-writer of the film’s screenplay. The creative team also includes scenic designer Richard Hudson, choreographer Garth Fagan, lighting designer Donald Holder, mask and puppet designer Michael Curry, sound designer Steve Canyon Kennedy and hair and makeup designer Michael Ward.
